ALCD (Acute Leukemia Characterization and Diagnosis) Flow Cytometry is a highly specialized test used to identify and characterize cell types based on the antigens (markers) present on their surface. By using laser-based technology and fluorescent antibodies, it can distinguish between normal blood cells and malignant 'blasts'.

Why it is Ordered

This test is critical when a clinician suspects a blood cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma. It is used to differentiate between Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which require vastly different treatment protocols. It is also used to monitor 'Minimal Residual Disease' (MRD) after chemotherapy.
