Function

A Blood Culture is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of microorganisms, such as bacteria or fungi, in the blood. Since blood is normally sterile, the presence of these pathogens indicates an active infection. 'Sensitivity' testing involves exposing the grown pathogens to various antibiotics to determine which drug is most effective at killing them.

Why it is Ordered

This test is critical for patients showing signs of systemic infection or sepsis, such as high fever, chills, rapid heart rate, or confusion. It is also used to diagnose endocarditis (infection of the heart valves) and to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for bloodstream infections.

Associated Conditions

  • Sepsis (Septicemia): A life-threatening immune response to a bloodstream infection.
  • Endocarditis: Bacterial infection of the lining of the heart or heart valves.
  • Osteomyelitis: Infection of the bone that has spread via the blood.
  • Fungemia: The presence of fungi or yeast in the blood, common in immunocompromised patients.

Why Context Matters

Contamination is a major issue with blood cultures. If the skin is not properly disinfected before the needle stick, common skin bacteria (like Staphylococcus epidermidis) can enter the bottle, leading to a 'false positive.' A second opinion or repeat culture is often required if only one out of multiple bottles shows growth of a common skin organism.

Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
