Function
A cervical biopsy is a diagnostic procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed from the cervix for microscopic examination by a pathologist. It is the definitive 'gold standard' for diagnosing cervical abnormalities that were previously detected by screening tools like a Pap smear or HPV (Human Papillomavirus) test.
Why it is Ordered
This procedure is ordered when a screening test shows abnormal (dysplastic) cells or when a physician observes suspicious lesions on the cervix during a colposcopy. Its purpose is to differentiate between benign inflammation, pre-cancerous changes (dysplasia), and invasive cervical cancer.
Associated Conditions
The results of a cervical biopsy are categorized into:
- CIN (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia): Graded 1 (mild) to 3 (severe/carcinoma in situ).
- HPV Infection: Often the underlying cause of cellular changes.
- Cervical Adenocarcinoma: Cancer originating in the glandular cells.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The most common type of cervical cancer.
- Cervicitis: Inflammation of the cervix due to infection or irritation.

Why Context Matters
Pathological interpretation of tissue can be subjective. Determining the grade of dysplasia (CIN 1 vs. CIN 2) can vary between pathologists, which significantly changes the treatment plan (e.g., 'watch and wait' vs. surgical excision). A second opinion by a specialized gynecologic pathologist is often recommended for borderline or high-grade results.
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
