Function

A Cyst Culture and Sensitivity test is performed to identify the presence of pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria or fungi) within a cyst or abscess and to determine which antibiotics or antifungals effectively inhibit their growth.

Why it is Ordered

This test is ordered when a patient has a localized swelling or cyst that appears infected (redness, pain, warmth, or purulent drainage). It is crucial for guiding targeted antibiotic therapy, especially in an era of increasing antibiotic resistance.

The Process

  1. Culture: The aspirated fluid is placed on various growth media to see if bacteria grow.
  2. Identification: If growth occurs, the specific organism is identified using biochemical or molecular methods.
  3. Sensitivity (Susceptibility): The identified organism is exposed to various antibiotics to see which ones work. Results are usually reported as 'Sensitive' (the drug works), 'Intermediate', or 'Resistant' (the drug does not work).

Associated Conditions

  • Infected Sebaceous Cysts: Often contain skin flora like Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Abscesses: Can contain anaerobic bacteria or MRSA.
  • Bartholin’s Cyst Infection: May involve various aerobic and anaerobic organisms.
  • Hydatid Cyst: While usually diagnosed via imaging, culture helps rule out secondary bacterial infection.

Why Context Matters

False negatives can occur if the patient has already started antibiotics before the sample was taken. Contamination with normal skin flora (e.g., Coagulase-negative Staphylococci) can lead to 'false positives' that do not represent the actual infection causing the symptoms.

Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
