Why Context Matters
D-Dimer has a high negative predictive value but low specificity. Levels can be elevated due to advanced age, pregnancy, active inflammation, recent surgery, trauma, or liver disease, necessitating clinical correlation to avoid over-diagnosis of thrombosis.
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
