Why Context Matters
Hematocrit is highly sensitive to plasma volume changes. A patient may appear to have high Hct due to simple dehydration (hemoconcentration) or low Hct due to fluid overload (hemodilution), masking the true red cell mass.
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
