Function

The HSV 1 IgG test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. IgG antibodies typically appear several weeks after the initial infection and persist for life, serving as a marker of 'past' or 'latent' exposure rather than an active, primary outbreak.

Why it is Ordered

This test is used to determine if a person has ever been infected with HSV-1. It is often requested by patients concerned about cold sores or genital lesions, though HSV-1 is most commonly associated with oral herpes. It helps distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 (genital herpes), although HSV-1 can also cause genital infections through oral-genital contact.

Associated Conditions

  • Oral Herpes (Cold Sores): The most common manifestation of HSV-1.
  • Herpetic Keratitis: An eye infection that can lead to scarring of the cornea.
  • Herpetic Whitlow: An infection of the finger.
  • Genital Herpes: Increasingly caused by HSV-1 via oral-genital transmission.

Why Context Matters

Serological tests for HSV can be confusing. IgG tests may produce false negatives if performed too early after exposure (the 'window period' can be up to 3-6 months). Furthermore, cross-reactivity between HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies can sometimes lead to ambiguous results in low-index cases.

Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
