Function
Triglycerides are a type of lipid (fat) found in the blood. When you eat, the body converts calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides, which are stored in fat cells. Later, hormones release them for energy between meals. While essential for life, high levels in the bloodstream are a major marker for metabolic health.
Why it is Ordered
Triglycerides are measured as part of a lipid panel to:
- Assess Cardiovascular Risk: High levels contribute to the hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis).
- Monitor Metabolic Syndrome: Along with blood pressure, glucose, and waist circumference.
- Screen for Pancreatitis Risk: Extremely high levels (>500 mg/dL) can cause acute inflammation of the pancreas.
Associated Conditions
- Hypertriglyceridemia: Often caused by obesity, sedentary lifestyle, or high-sugar diets.
- Type 2 Diabetes: Elevated levels are frequently seen with insulin resistance.
- Hypothyroidism: Can slow lipid metabolism.
- Kidney Disease: Nephrotic syndrome can alter lipid profiles.

Why Context Matters
Triglyceride levels are extremely volatile and sensitive to short-term lifestyle choices. Failure to fast for a full 9–12 hours is the most common cause of erroneously high results. Additionally, consuming alcohol within 24 hours of the test, recent heavy exercise, or a high-fat meal the previous evening can significantly spike the result. A second opinion often involves a repeat test after strict adherence to fasting protocols to confirm the baseline level.
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
