Function

The Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide (Anti-CCP) antibody test detects autoantibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly attack the body's own healthy tissues. Citrullination is a natural process in the body, but in certain individuals, the immune system views these citrullinated proteins as foreign invaders.

Why it is Ordered

This test is primarily used to diagnose Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). It is highly specific (around 95-98%), meaning if a person tests positive, they almost certainly have RA. It is often ordered alongside Rheumatoid Factor (RF). It is particularly useful in the early stages of the disease, as Anti-CCP can appear in the blood years before clinical symptoms manifest.

Associated Conditions

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: A chronic inflammatory disorder affecting joints.
  • Palindromic Rheumatism: A rare form of inflammatory arthritis.
  • Sjogren's Syndrome: Occasionally positive in this systemic autoimmune disease.

Why Context Matters

While highly specific, a negative result does not 100% rule out Rheumatoid Arthritis (seronegative RA). Biotin (Vitamin B7) supplements can interfere with many immunoassay-based tests, potentially leading to false results. Patients should stop biotin 48-72 hours before the blood draw.

Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
