Function
The COVID Biochemistry Panel is a cluster of laboratory tests used to monitor the physiological impact of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Unlike a PCR test which detects the virus itself, this panel assesses the body's systemic inflammatory response and organ function. Common markers included are C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), D-Dimer, and Ferritin.
Why it is Ordered
This panel is ordered to determine the severity of COVID-19 and to predict the risk of complications like the 'cytokine storm.' It helps clinicians decide on the level of care required (home monitoring vs. hospitalization) and the necessity for anticoagulants or corticosteroids.
Associated Conditions
Abnormal results in this panel are associated with:
- Hyperinflammation: Indicated by high CRP and Ferritin.
- Coagulopathy: Risk of blood clots indicated by elevated D-Dimer.
- Tissue Damage: Indicated by high LDH levels.
- Multi-organ Failure: Monitoring hepatic and renal markers within the panel.
- Severe Viral Pneumonia: Assessing the extent of pulmonary involvement.
Panel Components
This test is a profile comprising the following specific markers:
Why Context Matters
Biochemical markers for COVID-19 are non-specific. For example, CRP can be elevated due to any bacterial infection, and D-Dimer can rise due to age, pregnancy, or recent surgery. A second opinion is critical to ensure these elevations are correctly attributed to COVID-19 and not a secondary bacterial infection or a pre-existing chronic inflammatory condition.
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
