Function
The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Type 1 and 2 IgG test detects long-term antibodies against the viruses responsible for cold sores (HSV-1) and genital herpes (HSV-2). IgG antibodies typically develop within weeks to months of infection and remain for life.
Why it is Ordered
It is ordered to determine if a person has ever been infected with HSV. It is particularly useful for pregnant women, individuals with partners who have herpes, or those presenting with atypical genital or oral sores.
Associated Conditions
- HSV-1: Primarily associated with oral herpes (cold sores) but increasingly a cause of genital herpes.
- HSV-2: Primarily associated with genital herpes.
- Neonatal Herpes: Risk assessment for transmission during childbirth.
- Aseptic Meningitis: Occasionally associated with HSV-2 primary infections.

Why Context Matters
The 'window period' is a major confounding factor; it can take up to 3-6 months for IgG levels to become detectable after initial exposure. A second opinion/test is also warranted if the 'index' value is in the 'equivocal' range (0.91-1.09), as false positives are common in low-prevalence populations.
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
