Why Context Matters
Neutrophil counts can 'shift' rapidly from the margins of blood vessels into the circulation due to exercise, adrenaline, or smoking, leading to a high count without a true infection. Conversely, certain ethnicities naturally have lower 'normal' neutrophil counts (Duffy-null phenotype).
Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
