Function

This profile is a baseline hematological screen consisting of Hemoglobin (Hb), Total Count of WBCs (Tc), Differential Count (Dc), and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR). Together, these parameters provide a snapshot of the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity, the status of the immune system, and the presence of non-specific systemic inflammation.

Why it is Ordered

It is one of the most common 'general health' panels ordered during routine checkups or when a patient presents with vague symptoms like fatigue, fever, or weight loss. Hb detects anemia; Tc/Dc identifies bacterial or viral infections and allergic reactions; ESR acts as a sensitive (though non-specific) indicator of inflammatory activity in the body.

Associated Conditions

  • Anemia: Indicated by low Hb, which could be due to iron deficiency or chronic blood loss.
  • Infection/Leukocytosis: Indicated by high Tc/Dc (e.g., high Neutrophils for bacteria, high Lymphocytes for viruses).
  • Inflammatory Disorders: A high ESR is seen in conditions like Temporal Arteritis, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, or systemic Lupus.
  • Allergies/Parasites: Indicated by an elevation in Eosinophils within the Differential Count.

Panel Components

This test is a profile comprising the following specific markers:

Why Context Matters

ESR is a notoriously 'fussy' marker; it can be elevated simply due to age, pregnancy, or anemia, even in the absence of inflammation. Hemoglobin levels can be skewed by dehydration (making Hb appear falsely high). Differential counts can shift rapidly based on recent physical stress or even the time of day. A second opinion ensures these variables are accounted for before concluding a chronic condition exists.

Lab ranges are statistical averages, not biological laws. "Normal" for a 20-year-old male isn't normal for a 60-year-old female.
